After an internal investigation, the University of Kentucky has fired four cheerleading coaches including head coach Jomo K. Thompson. Thompson was a cheerleader at the University of Kentucky in 1996 and became head coach of the cheerleading squad in 2002.
Also, fired were assistant coaches Ben Head, Kelsey LaCroix and Spencer Clan. The internal investigation by the University determined that the four coaches failed to oversee a off-campus event that included hazing, alcohol use and nudity by members of the 24-time national champion cheerleading squad. The event allegedly occurred at Lake Cumberland in Kentucky in the summer of 2019 at a team retreat and the Universal Cheerleaders Association camp in Tennessee last year.
Boats and alcohol were brought to the retreat at Lake Cumberland with members of the squad were doing partially nude "basket tosses" of the newest team members into the lake.Coaches were aware and didn't confiscate alcohol brought to the retreat at Lake Cumberland. In Tennessee at the Universal Cheerleaders Association camp, members of the squad were doing lude dances while intoxicated.
University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto stated that the coaches knew or should have known about the inappropriate behavior.
The athletic department will take control of the cheerleading program and will be led by executive associate director Sandy Bell. She said that her department is working to create the infrastructure for the cheerleader squad to come under their jurisdiction.
The University is currently doing a national search for a new coach.
